Baltimore City Recycling

Weekly Recycling Instructions

 

  1. Use any container you want: paper bags, cardboard boxes, old laundry baskets – you can even use trash cans (just mark it “recycling”). The only rule? Do not place recycling in plastic bags.

  2. Fill Your Container With Recyclables : Paper, Cans, Cardboard, and Bottles.

  3. Put out all that you can – there is no limit to the amount of recycling you can put out.

  4. Set out recycling items ON FRIDAYS by 6 a.m. for collection.

  5. If your collection day falls on a holiday, please hold your recycling items until the make-up collection day which will be the following Saturday.

  6. You do NOT need a city issued recycled bin to recycle.

Recyclable Materials Accepted at Curbside Pickup

 

  1. Recyclable Materials accepted at curbside pick-up.

  2. Aerosol Cans (empty).

  3. Aluminum: cans, beverage and food containers, foil (clean), and pie pans.

  4. Books: hardbound, paperback and text books.

  5. Bottles: narrow-neck bottles used for food liquids, soap, soda or water - (lightly clean if heavily soiled).

  6. Cardboard and paperboard boxes corrugated boxes, egg containers, food boxes (including cereal boxes), frozen food packaging, mailing boxes, and oversized boxes.

  7. Cartons (waxed): used for a liquid such as juices, milk or soups.

  8. Glass containers such as bottles and jars (please rinse).

  9. Juice Boxes (clean).

  10. Mail: envelopes with plastic windows.

  11. Metal: beverage and food containers.

  12. Paper (all colors and types): catalogs, folders, junk mail, magazines, mixed paper, newsprint (all types), non-metallic wrapping paper, office papers, printer paper, school papers and shredded paper.

  13. Plastic: bottles and jars with symbols #1 through #7 (narrow neck and screw top – lightly clean if heavily soiled) -e.g., detergent/bleach bottles, juice bottles, milk jugs, soda bottles, water bottles. Containers with symbols #1 through #7 (wide-mouthed – lightly clean if heavily soiled) -e.g., cottage cheese, margarine, mayonnaise, sour cream and yogurt (caps and labels o.k.). Drinking cups and prescription bottles, including lids and caps.

  14. Tin: cans and foil.

Some Unacceptable Recycling Materials

 

  1. Some unacceptable recycling materials: Carry out or deli food containers Cat litter Chemicals Cookware and plates (plastic) Containers of toxic substances -e.g., bottles, cans motor oil, pesticides, etc. Contaminated paper products -e.g., napkins, paper towels, waxed paper, paper plates and tissue Contaminated plastic products -e.g., plates, utensils, cookware, to-go cartons Dry cleaning bags Food Waste Furniture of any kind Glass (window and mirror) Paint and paint cans Plastic bags including grocery and newspaper covers Utensils (plastic) Waxed paper Styrofoam.

  2. Polystyrene recycling is part of an overall upswing in recycling tonnage in Baltimore.

  3. Polystyrene, commonly referred to as “Styrofoam,” is used in foam cups, plates, egg cartons and as protective packaging for consumer goods and electronics. Styrofoam products began being accepted in 2012 and are only accepted at the Northwest Citizen’s Convenience Center at 2840 Sisson. Street. The material cannot be put out curbside with other recyclables.

  4. The city accepts clean foam that has a #6 symbol on it. Citizens should take care to rinse containers and cups before bringing them to the collection site. No straws, lids or stickers are accepted. Items should be brought in see-through plastic bags. No foam peanuts or insulation material is accepted.

  5. Styrofoam is collected at the Northwest Citizen’s Convenience Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Sunday.

  6. Yard Waste.

Yard Waste

 

The Bureau of Solid Waste takes yard waste. Please remember the following:

 

* Put your yard waste out on your trash collection day.

* Put it at the same place where you put out your trash.

* Put yard waste in plastic bags (preferably clear or labeled bags), paper bags, or bundle it.

* We may not pick up all of your yard waste at one collection; please limit yard waste to 5 bags per collection.

* We do not take tree branches larger than 4 inches in diameter or longer than 3 feet.

* You can also take your yard waste to any Citizen Drop-off Center.

Trash

The Bureau of Solid Waste is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of our city for residents, businesses and over 15 million visitors annually.

As part of the ongoing effort to keep our neighborhoods and waterways cleaner and healthier, Baltimore City is providing Municipal Trash Cans to every residential address that currently receives trash collection by the City. These durable, wheeled trash cans are equipped with attached, tight-fitting lids that have proven effective in keeping streets and alleys clean, and in deterring rodents. 

 

Trash pick up for our neighborhood is Wednesday.

Bulk Trash

​

Every month, Baltimoreans can place up to three items out for collection. One day per month is set aside for this collection. All citizens have to do is call 311 and tell us:

  1. Your address

  2. Your telephone #

  3. What 3 items

 

Call us three (3) or more working days before your scheduled date. If you do not know your day, please call 311 or schedule your collection using 311 Online.

 

Baltimore residents can also drop-off residential waste, bulk trash, recycling and eCycling Mon. – Sat., 9 am – 5 pm (Labor Day/Memorial Day) & 9 am – 7 pm (Memorial Day/Labor Day)
